How to Choose the Right Cabinet Size for Your Garage Wall

Choosing the wrong size garage cabinet is one of those mistakes that feels minor until you're living with the consequences. Cabinets that are too shallow don't hold what you need them to hold. Units that are too tall block windows or run into ceiling-mounted garage door openers. A run of fixed-width cabinets that doesn't quite fill the wall leaves an awkward gap that becomes a clutter magnet. And cabinets that extend too far out from the wall eat into the clearance you need to open car doors without scraping the paint.

None of these are difficult problems to avoid — but they require measuring and planning before you buy, not after. Here's a straightforward guide to sizing garage cabinets correctly the first time.

1. Measure the Wall Completely — Including Every Obstacle

A garage wall is rarely just a flat rectangle of available space. Before you can size cabinets accurately, you need to account for everything that interrupts or limits that wall.

Start with the full width of the wall from corner to corner, then subtract the space consumed by obstructions you can't move:

  • Service doors that swing into the garage and need clearance to open fully
  • Electrical panels that require unobstructed access — typically 36 inches of clearance in front
  • Windows that set a maximum height for anything directly below them
  • Water heaters, furnaces, or utility connections that need their own dedicated space
  • Garage door tracks and hardware that run along the ceiling and may limit how high wall-mounted cabinets can extend

Once you've noted all the fixed obstructions, measure the usable runs of wall between them. These are the sections where your cabinets will actually go. Write down the width, height from floor to ceiling, and depth available for each run — depth being the distance from the wall surface to the nearest obstacle in front of it, which is usually a parked vehicle.

2. Car Clearance Determines How Deep Your Cabinets Can Be

Cabinet depth is one of the most important dimensions in a garage, and one of the most frequently miscalculated. The depth of your cabinets determines how far they project off the wall — and that projection has to leave enough room for your vehicles to park and for doors to open without hitting the cabinet faces.

In a standard two-car garage, the side walls where cabinets typically live are the areas closest to the parked vehicles. The front doors of most passenger vehicles need about 30 to 36 inches of clearance to open fully. If your cabinets project 24 inches off the wall, that clearance comes out of the remaining space between the cabinet face and the side of the car.

A practical approach is to park your car in its normal position first, then measure the distance from the side of the vehicle to the wall. Subtract the minimum clearance you need to comfortably open the door — around 28 to 30 inches for most people — and the remainder is your maximum cabinet depth. For most garages, this lands somewhere between 16 and 24 inches, with 18 to 20 inches being the most common practical depth for side-wall garage cabinets.

3. Height Depends on What's Above the Wall, Not Just the Ceiling

Ceiling height in a garage is typically 8 to 10 feet, which sounds like plenty of room. But the usable wall height for cabinets is often less than it appears once you account for what runs along the ceiling and upper wall.

Garage door opener rails typically run horizontally across the ceiling, often at 7 to 8 feet off the floor. Cabinets that extend above the opener rail create an access problem — the rail gets in the way of opening the cabinet door fully. Along the side walls, the door opener hardware and torsion spring assembly may also limit how far toward the garage door end a tall cabinet can be installed without interfering with the mechanism.

Measure from the floor to the lowest overhead obstacle on each section of wall before committing to cabinet height. For most garages, a practical upper cabinet height that clears all ceiling hardware lands around 72 to 84 inches from the floor — roughly 6 to 7 feet. Above that, you're either in ceiling-hardware territory or in a zone that's genuinely difficult to access without a step stool, which limits the usefulness of the space for anything you need regularly.

4. Width Is Where Modular Systems Have a Clear Advantage Over Fixed Sizes

Standard fixed-width cabinets come in set increments — typically 12, 18, 24, 30, or 36 inches wide. The problem is that garage walls don't come in those increments. A usable wall run might be 112 inches wide, or 87 inches, or 143 inches. No combination of fixed-width cabinets fills these dimensions cleanly without leaving a gap or requiring filler panels that look like exactly what they are: an afterthought.

Gaps between cabinets and walls are more than cosmetic problems. They collect debris, become informal drop zones for anything that doesn't have a real home, and make the entire wall look unfinished regardless of how good the individual cabinets are.

Cabinet sizing isn't just about fitting the wall — it's about fitting what goes inside. Different categories of garage storage have genuinely different dimensional requirements, and a wall of identical cabinets rarely serves all of them well.

Tall items like brooms, rakes, shovels, and extension cords on reels need interior height that a standard upper cabinet doesn't provide. A full-height cabinet or a floor-to-ceiling enclosed section handles these better than trying to squeeze them into a 30-inch upper unit. Large power tools — table saws, compound miter saws, shop vacs — need a lower section deep enough and sturdy enough to support them properly. Small parts, hardware, and accessories need drawers or shallow shelves that don't require digging through a deep cabinet to find anything.

Map out the categories of items you're actually storing and their rough dimensions before you finalize your cabinet layout. A wall with a mix of full-height sections, upper cabinets with lower cabinets beneath, open shelving for frequently accessed items, and at least one deep bay for bulky gear will serve a working garage far better than a uniform row of identical units — regardless of how clean that uniform row looks in a planning diagram.
